How to Play
Word Square is a 4x4 grid where the four rows and the four columns each spell a real four-letter word. Tap a row to select it, then spell it from the letter strip, and the columns start falling into place as the rows do. Solve it and the score is 100 plus two points for every second left on the clock.

Tips & Tricks
- 1The columns constrain the rows, not the other way round. Once two rows are down, each column has two known letters, and a word that fits those is a much shorter search than starting from the clue that four unrelated words share a first letter.
- 2The score is 100 plus twice the seconds remaining, so speed is worth more than caution: finishing with 30 seconds left scores 160 and finishing with 10 scores 120. There is no partial credit for a grid that is nearly right.
- 3Eighty seconds of a 120-second clock is worth 80 points — the same as four-fifths of the completion bonus. If a row will not resolve, guessing it is cheaper than losing the remaining time to it.
- 4Each puzzle ships with a set of decoy words that fit some of the constraints but break the columns. A candidate that makes one row work and two columns impossible is the trap, and it is usually the most obvious word in the set.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the score calculated?
A solved grid pays 100 plus two points per second remaining on the 120-second clock, so the practical range is a little over 100 up to about 340. An unsolved grid pays nothing at all.
What makes a grid correct?
All four rows and all four columns must be real four-letter words. The rows are what you enter, but the columns are checked too, which is why a row that looks right can still be rejected.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Tapping a row selects it and tapping letters fills it, so no keyboard is needed.
